She broke the engagement herself, partly because of their inability to accept *either one's* career choice (she thought being a Beatle was a "fantasy" life) and partly because of Paul's philandering, despite their engagement. Neither was really suited to the other, unfortunately, and each had his/her dedication to a profession that was essential to his/her happiness.
